Introducing Whirls of Hope!

It's the very end of 2015.  Schnapps wanted to end the year with a hat pattern for everyone.  He actually created 2 new hats this weekend...his little paws were busy.  He has many plans for lots of new patterns in the new year too. 

Whirls of Hope is free here and Twisted Joy is for sale in our Craftsy and Ravelry stores.  Both are knit with super bulky yarn, but have instructions for other yarn weights too.

We wanted to share some interesting facts with you as the year comes to a close.  We are hoping that 2016 brings happiness, health and kindness to everyone and that it allows us to help more people than ever before.   Join us as we try to make the world a little bit better.

Did you know?

2016 will mark the 7th year that Delaware Head Huggers and Kozy Kovers for Kids have been in existence.  Let’s all work together to make it the best year yet!

2015 was the year we collected the most blankets so far, with 399 coming in.  Can we pass 400 next year?

2010, our first year, still holds the record for chemo caps with 3,520.  In 2015, we received 3,424 chemo caps, but we also participated in tiny preemie items for Bayhealth and in Operation Bottle Beanies.  Let’s break all records in 2016!

Operation Bottle Beanies raised $480 in its first year so far.  We will be doing this again next year too.

Whirls of Hope

You will need about 70 yards of 6-weight yarn and size US 13 needles or some combination listed below.

 Abbreviations:

C2F: knit the second stitch, without dropping the first stitch, then knit the first and drop both from the left hand needle.

C2B: knit the second stitch through the back loop, without dropping the first stitch, then knit the first and drop both from the left hand needle.

k2tog:  knit 2 stitches together

Cast on 48 stitches, place marker and join, taking care not to twist stitches.

Work Brim:
Row 1: *k2, p2*; repeat around
Repeat Row 1  for about 2  inches.

Work Pattern:

Row 1 : *C2F, C2B, k4*; repeat around
Rows 2, 4, 6 & 8:  knit all stitches
Row 3:   *C2B, C2F, k4*; repeat around
Row 5:   *k4, C2F, C2B*; repeat around
Row 7:   *k4, C2B, C2F*; repeat around
Repeat Rows 1 - 8 until piece measures 7.5 to 8  inches in length.

Decrease Crown:  use dpn’s when needed
Row 1:  *k6, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 2:  *k5, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 3:  *k4, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 4:  *k3, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 5:  *k2, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 6:   *k1, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 6:   *k2tog*; repeat around

Finish: Cut working yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail.  Draw the tail through the remaining stitches, cinch closed and secure.  Weave in ends.

If using 5-weight yarn, use size 11 needles and cast on 72.

If using 4-weight yarn, use size 8 needles and cast on 88.

If using 3-weight yarn, use size 5 needles and cast on 112 stitches.

The pattern is worked over 8 stitches.   

Introducing For a Bibliophile!

It's a week until Christmas and we're just about ready.  Presents are wrapped, the house is decorated and next week we'll be baking up a storm.  We needed a small gift for a friend who loves to read.......so Schnapps came up with this bookmark.  It's knit using KnitPicks Shine Sport yarn and size 5 needles, but you could use any yarn and needles really.......it will just change the size of the finished item.  Since many of our friends are looking for last minute gift ideas too, we thought we'd share.

I wouldn't use 5 or 6 weight yarn because it would be too large and thick, but that's just my opinion.  This one is about 11 inches long and about 2 inches wide.  It's super simple and a fast knit.  While you are at it, make an extra one for your local librarian............I'm sure they would love it.

This used just a small amount of 3 weight yarn and size 5 needles.

Abbreviations:

k2tog:  knit 2 stitches together as one
yo:  yarn over
skpsso:  slip 1 stitch, knit the next, then pass the slipped stitch over the knit stitch
sl:  slip 1 stitch
psso:  pass slipped stitch over

Cast on 53 stitches

Work Edge

Knit every stitch for 2 rows

**Every row will start and end with 2 knit stitches.  These stitches are NOT included in the pattern.  Place markers to remind yourself to knit those stitches for an even, flat edge.**

Row 1:  k4, *k2tog, yo, k1, yo, skpsso, k7*; repeat from * to * to last 9; k2tog, yo, k1, yo, skpsso, k4

Rows 2, 4, 6, 8 & 10: purl all

Introducing A Textured Path and A Break in the Clouds!

It's December!  It's almost Christmas!  There is so much to be done that Schnapps and I are going full speed just about all day, every day.  Those of you who subscribe to the newsletter got the pattern for Textured Path a couple of weeks ago.  We just realized that we never shared it with everyone, so it's going up today.

We are also putting a new cowl pattern, A Break in the Clouds, up for sale.  You can purchase it directly here.  It is just $4 and all the proceeds go to Delaware Head Huggers!  It will be available in our Craftsy and Ravelry stores.  Directions include information for different yarn weights as well as instructions for modifying the size.  The model was knit using one skein of Lion Brand's Wool Ease Thick and Quick......just about 106 yards and an hour or so and you have a great gift!

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving - we are thankful always for your help and support.  As of November 23, we have collected and distributed 18,835 chemo caps and 1,969 blankets.  Operation Bottle Beanies is still running and we collected many items for Code Purple as well.  We did a project for Bayhealth making tiny preemie items and in February we will again be participating in Red Hats for Heart Month with A.I. duPont Children's Hospital.  It takes many, many hands and hearts to make all these projects successful and we thank each of you who help in any way.

A Trio of Headbands!

It's almost Halloween!  Schnapps loves to sit outside and see all the kids in their costumes.  To us, Halloween is always the 'kick-off' to the holidays......it seems like Thanksgiving is right around the corner and Christmas is already less than 2 months away.

If you follow us, you know that we are trying to help the homeless this year too.  We made some headbands to donate and Schnapps wanted to share the patterns with you.  Really, they are just short hats without the crown decreases, but here are three different ones that can be made in any yarn, any color and made either cinched or not depending on your preference.  

We hope you like these.  They are perfect to use with those partial skeins that are left over from other projects.  Feel free to use the patterns to make gifts for this holiday season, but please be sure to make a few to donate to those in need also.

A TRIO OF HEADBANDS 

You will need between 25 to 40 yards of 6 weight yarn on size 13 circular needles.  Other yarn weights are explained below.

Braided Hope Headband

Braided Hope Headband:

                            Cast on 48 stitches, place marker and join, taking care not to twist stitches.

Work Pattern:

Rows 1, 2 & 4: *p2, k2*; repeat around
Row 3: *p2, k2tog but do not drop stitches off  LH needle, knit the 1st stitch again, then drop both*; repeat around

Repeat Rows 1 - 4 until the piece measures  between 3 and 4 inches or longer is you wish.  Bind off all stitches knit-wise.

Karmic Kuddles Headband

Karmic Kuddles Headband:

                  Cast on 48 stitches, place marker and join, taking care not to twist stitches.

Work Pattern:

Row 1: *k1, s1pw, k1, yo, pass slipped stitch over the k1 and the yo, k1*; repeat around

Row 2: knit all stitches

Repeat Rows 1 - 2 until the piece measures  3 to 4 inches in length.  Bind off all stitches knit-wise. 

Inspiration Headband

Inspiration Headband

Cast on 48 stitches, place marker and join, taking care not to twist stitches.

Work Pattern:

Row 1:   knit all stitches
Row 2:  *p1, k1*; repeat around


Repeat Rows 1 - 2 until the piece is 3 to 4 inches in length.  Bind off all stitches knit-wise.

 All headbands can be left plain or cinched.  To cinch, simply take a few yards of yarn and wind it tightly around a small section of the headband.  Secure tightly and weave in ends.

You can make the headbands wider for extra warmth.  Simply knit more rows.

All headbands are knit using multiples of 4.  If you want to make the band smaller, decrease the number of cast on stitches by increments of 4.  If you want to make the band larger, increase the number of cast on stitches by increments of 4.

To use 4- weight yarn, use size 8 needles and cast on 80 stitches.

To use 5-weight yarn, use size 11 needles and cast on 64 stitches.

To use 3-weight yarn, use size 6 needles and cast on 96 stitches.

Introducing Hyperbola!

The weather is finally starting to be a bit cooler here in Delaware.....not cool enough for us yet, but at least not so hot.  Schnapps came up with this hat in this fabulous shade of blue during a Football Sunday.  It's made with 6-weight, super bulky yarn, but there are instructions for all yarn weights too.

You will need 6-weight yarn and size US 13 needles or some combination listed below.

Abbreviations:
CB4:  move 2 stitches to cable needle and hold to back.  Knit 2 from left needle, then knit 2 from cable needle.

CF4: move 2 stitches to cable needle and hold to front.  Knit 2 from left needle, then knit 2 from cable needle.

p2tog:  purl 2 stitches together as one

Cast on 48 stitches, place marker and join, taking care not to twist stitches.

Work Brim: 
Row 1:  *k2, p2*; repeat around
Repeat Row 1 for 1.5 to  2 inches

Work Pattern:
Foundation Row:  purl all stitches
Row 1: k4, CB4, CF4, k4, purl to end
Rows 2, 4 & 6:  k16, purl to end
Row 3:  k2, CB4, k4, CF4, k2, purl to end
Row 5:  CB4, k8, CF4, purl to end

Repeat Rows 1 - 6 until piece measures 7.5 to 8  inches in length. 

Decrease Crown:  use dpn’s when needed
Row 1:  *p2, p2tog*; repeat around
Row 2: *p1, p2tog*; repeat around
Row 3: *p2tog*; repeat around

The pattern is worked over 16 stitches.    I prefer the look of the one design, but you can repeat the design if you wish.  The way the pattern is written, you can repeat it 3 times.

  

Introducing the Neck Nuzzler Infinity Scarf!

Schnapps loves the Noggin Nuzzler hat and the Body Nuzzler blanket square, so he decided to put that pattern to use and create the Neck Nuzzler Infinity Scarf!  This scarf works up very quickly and used just one skein of Lion Brand's Wool-Ease Thick and Quick.  He just knit until he had just enough for the bind off!  

The Neck Nuzzler is knit in the round, eliminating the need for any seams.  This can easily be made into a mobius infinity scarf too by just twisting your stitches before joining in the round.

The Neck Nuzzler

You will need 106 yards or more of 6-weight yarn and size US 15 circular needles (24 or 36 inches in length)

Cast on 128 stitches, place marker and join, taking care not to twist stitches.

Work Pattern:

Rows 1 & 2:  *k2, p2*, repeat around
Rows 3 & 4:  *p2, k2*, repeat around

Repeat Rows 1 - 4 until piece measures 4.5 to 5 inches in width.  End with a Row 2 or a Row 4.

If you are using one skein of yarn, just be sure to leave enough to bind off your stitches.

Bind Off all stitches knitwise.  Weave in your ends.

This pattern is in multiples of 4, so feel free to make it longer by casting on extra stitches in multiples of four.

 The scarf is about 60 inches in length.  Feel free to shorten it by casting on fewer stitches, again, decreasing in multiples of four.

To make it a mobius infinity scarf, twist your stitches before you join in the round.

Introducing Crossroads!

Two new patterns today!  Schnapps has been busy....it's been so hot here that he's been hiding in the cool house playing with yarn.  Here is his original plan and this time he made sure to double check his math!  :)  Made with Lion Brand Hometown USA, this hat knits up super fast and is just a one row pattern!  I really like the way the crown decrease looks.  Other yarn weight instructions are included also.

Cast on 50 stitches, place marker and join, taking care not to twist stitches.


Work Pattern:
Row 1:  *p3, k2tbl*, repeat around

Repeat Row 1 until piece measures 7.5 to 8.5 inches in length.

Decrease Crown:  use dpn’s when needed
Row 1:  *p1, p2tog, k2tbl*; repeat around
Row 2:   *p2tog, k2togtbl*; repeat around
Row 3:   *k2togtbl*; repeat around


Finish: Cut working yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail.  Draw the tail through the remaining stitches, cinch closed and secure.  Weave in ends and give it to someone special!

Cinching:  Cut an 8 inch piece of yarn, either matching or contrasting for a different look and thread it through a yarn needle.  At about halfway up the length of the hat, bring the yarn needle up on the outer side of one knit section and then down on the outer side of the next knit section.  Wrap the yarn three times around, cinching the 2 knit sections together.  Take care not to cinch too tightly since that could distort the fit of the hat.  Tie off the yarn on the inside of the hat and weave in end.  Repeat for every 2 knit sections around the hat.

If using 5-weight yarn, use size 10.5 needles and cast on 70. 

If using 4-weight yarn, use size 7 needles and cast on 90. 

If using 3-weight yarn, use size 5 needles and cast on 110. 

If making a child’s hat, use 4 weight yarn, size 8 needles and cast on 70 stitches.  Adjust in increments of 10.

The pattern is worked over 10 stitches.

Introducing Balance Beam!

It's finally September!  Hats are shipping out every week so patients are supplied when the weather turns colder.  We are in the midst of a heat wave right now, but Schnapps is planning ahead and working on warm, toasty hats.  He had a plan in mind when he started this hat and then realized that he miscalculated..........so he changed it up and ended with this.  It's made with Lion Brand Hometown USA, well less than one skein.  Info for other yarn weights is included also.

And don't forget about Operation Bottle Beanies!  We are collecting tiny hats that will be placed on jars and bottles at Fifer's Farm Store in the Fall. From olive oil bottles up to quart size mason jars and all sizes in between! These hats will be sold and 100% of that money will be donated to keep people in Delaware warm this winter.  Yes, it is just for Delaware right now, but Schnapps and I are dreaming big.......we hope that someday it reaches well beyond our tiny state.

Repeat Row 1 until piece measures 6.5 to 7.5 inches in length.


Decrease Crown:  use dpn’s when needed
Row 1: *k5, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 2: *k4, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 3: *k3, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 4: *k2, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 5: *k1, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 6: *k2tog*; repeat around

Finish: Cut working yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail.  Draw the tail through the remaining stitches, cinch closed and secure.  Weave in ends and give it to someone special who may find themselves performing a balancing act these days and could use some love!

If using 5-weight yarn, use size 11 needles and cast on 70. 

If using 4-weight yarn, use size 7 needles and cast on 91. 

If using 3-weight yarn, use size 5 needles and cast on 105 stitches. 

For a child’s hat, use 4 weight yarn, size 7 needles and cast on 70 stitches.  Adjust in increments of 7.

The pattern is worked over 7 stitches.
