This hat was designed and knit on Friday the 13th, hence the "lucky in its name! It uses the Alternating Dots stitch pattern too, which explains the rest of its name!
I used one skein of Vanna's Colors and had a decent amount left over. Since I managed to purchase the yarn at the amazing price of $1.44 per skein, I was very excited to see that an entire hat could be made using less than the 101 yards!! Here is a close up of the stitch definition.....I hope it's clear enough. This is a nice chemo cap as well as being just a nice hat!

The Lucky Dots Hat
Size
10.5 circular knitting needles
5-weight
yarn – about 100 yards
Cast on 55 stitches
Work Ribbed Brim
Row 1: *
K3, P2 *; repeat across row
Row
2:
Repeat Row 1
Repeat
Rows 1 & 2 until the piece is 2 inches long
Work Alternating Dots
Pattern:
Row 1: Knit
all stitches
Row
2: K1,
* P1, K1 *; repeat from * to * across row
Row
3: Knit
all stitches
Row
4: P1,
* K1, P1 *; repeat from * to * across row
Repeat
Rows 1 – 4 until piece measures between 7.5 and 8 inches in length.
Decrease for the crown:
Row
1: *
K3, K2tog *; repeat across row
Row
2: Purl all stitches
Row 3: *
K2, K2tog *; repeat across row
Row
4: Purl all stitches
Row 5: *
K1, K2tog *; repeat across row
Finish:
Cut working yarn, leaving a
6-inch tail.
Draw the tail through the remaining stitches on the
needles. Cinch closed.
Weave in ends.

ReplyDeleteSize 10.5 circular knitting needles, and how long should be the cord? After decreasing the stitches and they become difficult on the circular needle do I need to transfer the stitches to some dpn's? OR I just use de circle needles without join on the first row at all? thanks!

The cord should be 16 inches or less. I did not have to use dpns.......the decreases should fit on the circulars, but you could use dpns if you wanted to do so.

DeleteI lost my hubby to cancer, now knit chemo hats. Love your patterns, am on #6 since Christmas. thanks for all the great work you do. Chemo is not fun, as anyone knows who has watched a loved one go thru it.

DeleteThanks for response- do join on first round! I could not find a 10.5 cir needle so I got a 10 with 16 inches but it is awfully small. Is this hat for a child or should I use a larger needle and more cast ons? I am fairly new at knitting and appreciate your advise.
ReplyDeleteIf you are using a 10, I'd cast on an extra 5 or 10 stitches. The hat is for an adult. If it's the first time you're using the circulars, they appear very small, but magically make a hat the right size.

ReplyDeleteYou could, but you would need to reverse the even rows of the pattern to accommodate it.

ReplyDeleteHow many stitches will be on your circular needle after decreasing at the end? I have 25 after the last decrease. That doesn't seem right!
ReplyDeleteI didn't write down how many, but you can always just add rows of k2tog to a crown decrease it you want.
DeleteIs it possible to use the Magic loop method to make this hat? I always have the hardest time finding 16" length but the long ones are always abundant! I was thinking of trying the magic loop to accommodate this.

DeleteI am so frustrated. I am teaching myself to knit via the internet. I now want to use circular needles. I hve US 6,7,8 - 16 inches. A box full of yarn given to me. I don't much about the yarns as they are odds and ends. I cannot find an easy pattern to fit these size needles, Can anyone help. Most of the yarns and wool do not have any labels on them.

ReplyDeleteI liked this pattern but had size 15 circular needles. I adapted with 45 stitches and size 5 yarn. It turned out nicely and the dot pattern looks cute.your instructions were great. It was my first time knitting a cap for an ill friend and it looks great. Thanks.

DeleteI love the Scnhapps patterns. I have quite a few in my "cap notebook" and they have become my favorite. I just finished knitting cap #700, which is donated to charity. The group I knit with donated 1650 caps this past few months to schools, charities, Veterans, etc. This number is down from prior years since two of our "busiest" knitters have moved from the area. All of our yarn is donated, and many of our caps combine several colors to use up tag ends of yarn. I especially like Schnapps' patterns since many of them give adaptations for other sizes of yarn. I look forward to seeing more patterns from this site.

She wants me to knit the baby some "girlie" hats to go with her white winter coat, as its getting colder here in Nova Scotia Canada. I was wondering if you could tell me where to find patterns that are tiny..as she is underweight. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
