Introducing Triangulated!

 It's been a long time since a new hat pattern went up!  I've been busy bagging and tagging hats - we are almost to 40,000 chemo caps delivered!  I've also been decorating the library for the Summer Reading Program and working on stories and crafts for the library as well.  But, Triangulated is finished and written up and I wanted to share it with you today.  There is a link to the free PDF at the bottom of this post.

This was knit with Lion Brand Nuboo yarn.  It's very silky and soft.....so it might slip a little while you are knitting, but it's worth it.  It has a beautiful shine to it and it's very breathable.

Introducing Love Swirls!

New year, new hat patterns.  Schnapps spent his New Year's Eve and Day working on this new hat.  We are sharing it with you now so that if you are in the path of this big snow storm headed for the East Coast and you have some yarn on hand (and really, who doesn't have at least SOME yarn, right?), then you can make one or two or more of these while you are snowed in.

In 2017 we passed 25,300 chemo caps shipped to centers and individuals throughout the USA.  We are hoping that 2018 allows us to help even more people.  Please consider making chemo caps and donating them locally or sending them to us if you use our patterns for any reason.  There is a true need for them, all year long, but especially in the cold weather.

Thank you Teresita for the name of this hat!  This one was knit using Knit Picks Brava Bulky yarn, but of course, Schnapps included instructions for all yarn weights.  Keep in mind that if you are using super bulky yarn, you will only be able to do one pattern repeat on the body of your hat.  Since this is stranded color work, just be careful to not pull your stitches too tight too!  All sorts of color combinations would be great with this pattern.

Santa Paws came and Schnapps found presents on Christmas morning!

Schnapps and I got some great knitting gifts this year, including Andrea Rangel's AlterKnit Stitch Dictionary............this hat is just the first of many projects inspired by that book I am sure.

You will need size 10 US circular needles and 5 weight yarn or some other variation listed below.

Abbreviations:

k2tog:  knit 2 stitches together

Using Color A, cast on 72 stitches, place marker and join, taking care not to twist stitches.

Work Brim:  Using Color A

Row 1:   knit all stitches

Row 2:   purl all stitches

Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until your work measures 2 to

3 inches in length.  End with a Row 1.

Work Body of Hat:  all stitches are knit stitches.  The numbers and letter refer to color:

Row 1:   *2a, 3b, 1a*; repeat around

Row 2:  *1a, 1b, 3a, 1b*; repeat around

If using 6-weight yarn, use size 13 needles and cast on 48.   You can only do one pattern repeat in the body in this weight yarn.   

If using 4-weight yarn, use size 7 needles and cast on 84.  

If using 3-weight yarn, use size 5 needles and cast on 102 stitches.   

This  pattern is worked over 6 stitches.  Adjust accordingly for size differences.

Introducing Sunflower Spark!

Summer is almost over!  Schnapps and I are excited for Fall to get here with cooler temperatures so we can do more fun things outdoors.  We grew sunflowers this year and loved them so much that Schnapps worked a pattern around them.  We hope you like it.

This was knit using KnitPicks CotLin and Comfy yarns, which are 3-weight.  We included directions for other yarn weights as well.  The hat will look much different in a 6-weight yarn, but we think it will still be cute.  Let us know how your version turns out.  You could also knit this in many different color combinations...................there are lots of variations of sunflowers and this pattern will make a colorful, fun hat no matter which 4 colors you choose.

Introducing Amethyst Array!

Schnapps has been powering his little paws through lots of yarn!  He has been busy helping me get ready for Christmas also.  We've shipped out so many hats lately, but there is still such a need for more..........so, he grabs some yarn and whips up hats whenever he gets a chance to rest!  

This is a very busy time of year for many, but please try to take some time to do something for someone else.  And make sure, if you are using our patterns, that you make at least a couple of hats to donate to those in need.

This hat is knit using Lion Brand Hometown USA, but instructions are included for other yarn weights as well.  Various color combinations would work well as would just a single color.

Repeat Row 1 until your work measures 1.5 to  2 inches in length, or longer if you prefer.  The brim can be folded over as above or left longer as on the next page.

Work Body of Hat:
Color A:  knit one row
Switch to Color B
Row 1:   *s1, k1*; repeat around
Row 2:   *s1, p1*; repeat
Row 3:   *k1, s1*; repeat around
Row 4:   *p1, s1*; repeat around

Repeat Rows 1 -4 until piece is about 6 to 6.5 inches in length.  End on a Row 2 or 4 and then knit one row still using Color B.

Switch back to Color A

Introducing Tranquil Waves

Happy Giving Tuesday!  Schnapps insisted that we get this up today as a gift to everyone.  Please use this pattern to make a difference for someone.  And for your own enjoyment, of course!

This hat was knit using 3 colors of Lion Brand Hometown USA yarn, but instructions are below for other yarn weights as well.  Schnapps took 3 new skeins of yarn and created 3 hats using the same color combinations.  This pattern would be great for using up your yarn stash too.........and you could always use more colors than just three - play around with different combinations and see what results.

I think this pattern is a great unisex pattern.......and remember, many men undergo chemotherapy and get cold heads too.  Hats are shipping out again this week and more are needed always.  Help our your local cancer center if you can and drop off a few hats you make this holiday season.

Introducing Ribbon Candy!

The wonderful people at Lion Brand Yarn sent us some Hometown USA to make more chemo caps with and Schnapps picked out 2 skeins and sat down last football Sunday to make a hat.  Since Thanksgiving is just around the corner, we wanted to make sure we shared this pattern now, so you can knit one or two or three up over the long holiday weekend.  Be sure to donate one to brighten someone's day!

Ribbon Candy is eye catching in these bright colors, but I think it would look equally as nice in more muted tones too.  Experiment with colors and see what you come up with.  Send us some pictures of your creations please.  You could even make the brim a completely different color and add even more contrast.

As always, we have included instructions for other yarn weights.  I think all yarn weights could work equally as well for this pattern.........although giving extremely different looks.

Introducing Urban Night!

Schnapps latest hat is ready to be shared with everyone.  He's been busy making bottle beanies and scarves for Code Purple and taking care of shipping out LOTS of hats!  Seven giant boxes of hats shipped out in the past couple of weeks and a few huge bags of hats were dropped off also.  There is still a huge need for more though, so keep them coming to us or to your local cancer centers!

 

 

Thank you Lani for the name again......we would put you on the payroll as official hat namer, but we don't get paid, so we don't have a payroll.  You are greatly appreciated though!

This was knit using our favorite Hometown USA, but as always, there are instructions for different yarn weights listed below.  There are a ton of color possibilities for this pattern......that would suit men and women.  It's a great way for using up the leftover yarn from making other hats for us.....and we're pretty sure you have some left over yarn too.  Have fun and experiment with different colors.  Send us some photos of your choices so we can see all the creativity out there!

Introducing Pumpkin Spice!

Fall is coming!  Schnapps is sure of it!  Football starts soon and this morning there was finally a slight cool breeze instead of just heat and humidity.  It's time to get moving on all sorts of projects:  hats, blankets, bottle beanies, items for Code Purple, ladybug hats!  We should all be very busy for quite some time.

Schnapps latest hat, Pumpkin Spice (thanks Lani for the name!) is made with Lion Brand Hometown USA yarn.......just a small amount of one color and about half a skein of a second color.  It can be worked in any color combination you like and could easily work in just one color too.  It's a great way to use up those odds and ends that you have left after a project.  Instructions are included for all yarn weights too so you can use what you have in your stash.

and it's reversible!

If using 4-weight yarn, use size 7 needles and cast on 84.

If using 3-weight yarn, use size 5 needles and cast on 102 stitches. 

The pattern is worked over 3 stitches.

Feel free to use just 1 color.

Introducing Love Under Wraps

Schnapps was looking through our yarn stash and found these 2 colors of Lion Brand Organic Cotton.  He decided to see how they worked together and Love Under Wraps (thanks Lani, for the name!) was created.  We hope you like it.  

This pattern has a ton of potential for various color combinations.  This yarn has a bit of texture to it, which looks lovely (we think) but we think it will also look great in a smoother fiber.  It is deceptively simple.....you're just slipping a couple of stitches each row to create the effect.  Have fun with it and make some happiness to give to others!

Some of you may have noticed that negative comments are being deleted.  If you don't like the format of this blog or you think that the colors don't work together, please don't bother to post a comment about it.  If you have a genuine question, feel free.  I answer those that I am able, although I can not give individual knitting lessons via blog comments.  The world has enough horror and hatred and darkness.........this page is for spreading some happiness to those who need it most.  You are not obligated to be here, nor are you obligated to use any of my free patterns.

 Love Under Wraps

You will need 5-weight yarn and size US 10 circular needles.

Abbreviations:

s2: slip 2 stitches purlwise, holding yarn in back
s2wyif: slip 2 stitches purlwise, holding yarn in front
k2tog:  knit 2 stitches together

Using Color A, cast on 66 stitches, place marker and join, taking care not to twist stitches.

Work Brim:  Using Color A
Row 1:   knit all stitches
Row 2:   purl all stitches
Repeat Rows 1 & 2  until your work measures about 2 to 2.5 inches in length. 

Work Pattern Band of Hat

Color B  
Rows 1 & 2:  *k4, s2*  repeat around

Color A
Row 3:  *k4, s2*; repeat around
Row 4:  *p4, s2wyif*; repeat around

Color B  
Rows 5 & 6:  *k1, s2, k3*  repeat around

Color A
Row 7:  *k1, s2, k3*; repeat around
Row 8:  *p1, s2wyif, p3*; repeat around

Repeat Rows 1 - 8 , ending on a Row 4 or 8 when your piece is 7 to 7.5 inches in length. 

Work Top of Hat Using Color A: use dpn’s when needed
Row 1:   knit all stitches
Rows 2 and all even rows:   purl all stitches
Row 3:   *k4, k2tog *; repeat around
Row 5:   *k3, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 7:   * k2, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 9:   * k1, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 11:   *k2tog*; repeat around

Finish: Cut working yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail.  Draw the tail through the remaining stitches, cinch closed and secure.  Weave in ends and share.

If using 6-weight yarn, use size 13 needles and cast on 48. 

If using 4-weight yarn, use size 7 needles and cast on 84. 

If using 3-weight yarn, use size 5 needles and cast on 102 stitches.  

The pattern is worked over a multiple of 6 stitches.

Introducing Interwoven Hope!

Schnapps' first new hat pattern of 2016!  We hope your year is off to a wonderful start and that you will find lots of time to help others in the coming months.

This hat was knit using Lion Brand Hometown USA yarn and works up very quickly.  I have included directions for other yarn weights as well, for your convenience.

 

Sadly, many people do not seem to read this blog - they just grab free patterns and then send me emails demanding that the blog format be changed, complaining that they can't find the free patterns, only links to my stores, or basically just complaining about life in general.  I try to help those who have legitimate questions, but I do not respond to those who are just looking to cause problems.  The yarn weights that I list are the most common.  I give information about the pattern repeats.....if you want more than that, you will have to do the math yourself.  Experiment a bit - you might be surprised at how easy it is to do.

I completely understanding wanting free patterns.....especially when you are knitting for charity, as so many of you are doing, all the time.  However, I know that many people do not use my patterns for charity.  When a pattern is created, it takes time and effort.  The pattern is knit, written down, typed up and shared.  Thank you is the appropriate response, to any one who shares their creativity with others.  Those small minded, unhappy people who make negative comments are to be pitied, but deleted.

Interwoven Hope

 

You will need about 70 yards of 6-weight yarn and size US 13 needles or some combination listed below.

 

Abbreviations:

T2L: purl the second stitch, then knit the first, dropping both at the same time.
T2R: knit the second stitch, then purl the first, dropping both at the same time.
C2L: knit into the back of the second stitch, then knit into the back of the first stitch, dropping both at the same time.
p2tog:  purl 2 stitches together
k2tog:  knit 2 stitches together

Cast on 48 stitches, place marker and join, taking care not to twist stitches.

Work Pattern:
Rows 1, 2, 3, 4 & 10:   *k1, p2, k1*; repeat around
Row  5 :   *T2L, T2R*; repeat around
Rows  6 & 8: *p1, k2, p1*; repeat around
Row 7:  *p1, C2L, p1*; repeat around
Row 9:   *T2R, T2L*; repeat around


Repeat Rows 1 and 10 until your work measures about
7.5 to 8  inches in length. 


Decrease Crown:  use dpn’s when needed
Row 1:  *k1, p2tog, k1*; repeat around
Row 2:  *k1, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 3:  * k2tog*; repeat around

Finish: Cut working yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail.  Draw the tail through the remaining stitches, cinch closed and secure.  Weave in ends and share.

 

 If using 5-weight yarn, use size 11 needles and cast on 64. 

If using 4-weight yarn, use size 8 needles and cast on 80.  You may wish to repeat Row 3 of the crown decrease.

If using 3-weight yarn, use size 5 needles and cast on 104 stitches.   You may wish to repeat Row 3 of the crown decrease.

The pattern is worked over 4 stitches.  Adjust in multiples of 4 to have the crown decrease remain the same.
