Knitting with Schnapps Paperbacks and Kindle Books!

Hi Everyone!  It's finally cold here in Delaware.  And today is really cold!  Schnapps and I have been hard at work on hats, blankets, Christmas gifts and taking lots of walks!

Schnapps latest news is that we have two books published on Amazon in paperback and Kindle versions.  Paperbacks are printed in full color on 8.5 x 11 paper and will be delivered right to your door.  These could be good gift ideas for knitters you love.

Just go to Amazon.com and search "Knitting with Schnapps" or "Agar-Celli" to find them, or use the title links below.  Sales of course go towards helping us cover shipping and supply costs for shipping hats out across the country.

The first paperback is called Knitting with Schnapps: Knit Hat Pattern Collection: Volume 1 A Colorwork Collection.  It is a collection of 23 unique hat patterns and contains instructions for each pattern to use super bulky, chunky, worsted or sport weight yarn, depending on the knitter's preference.  This is also available as a Kindle book.

The second paperback book is Knitting with Schnapps: Accessories to Knit, Wear and Share!  This is also able to be purchased as a Kindle book.   Boot toppers, headbands, scarves and a pair of arm warmers are all included.  All but one lace scarf has instructions for using all yarn weights too, making the patterns very adaptable to whatever yarn you have in your stash!  Get a copy for you and make gifts for friends and family this year or buy the book as gifts for special knitters in your life.

Introducing Viridian Pathways!

Schnapps was busy on this penultimate Football Sunday of the season.  He worked up this hat first last week and then knit a variation of it this weekend.  We want to remind everyone that chemo caps are in desperate need all over the world.  Help out locally by knitting several and bringing them to your local cancer center.  Or, if you don't know where to bring them, send them to us and we'll get them to people who need them.  

The first version was knit using Hometown USA, a 6-weight yarn.  The second version was knit using KnitPicks Brava Bulky, a 5-weight yarn.  Instructions for all yarn weights are below.  

This pattern is simple and versatile - and only 2 rows to remember.  Just knit it as a brim and top it with a stockinette crown and you have an entirely different look.  You could add a stripe or two and use this as a great stash buster as well.

Along with 3 never before published patterns, there are 12 patterns found on the blog, Knitting with Schnapps. Patterns vary in complexity, so there is something for everyone. Viridian Pathways

 

You will need 6-weight yarn and size US 13 circular needles or some other combination listed below. 

 

 
Abbreviations:
C3:  knit the 3rd stitch on the left hand needle, but don’t drop, then knit the first and second stitch and drop all.
k2tog:  knit 2 stitches together

Cast on 50 stitches, place marker and join, taking care not to twist stitches.

Work Pattern:
Row 1:  *k3, p2*; repeat around
Row 2:   *C3, p2*; repeat around

Repeat Rows 1 - 2  until piece is anywhere from 7.0 to 7.5 inches in length.  End with a Row 1.

Decrease Crown:  use dpn’s when needed
Row 1:   *C3, p2tog*; repeat around
Row 2:    *k1, k2tog, p1*; repeat around
Row 3:   *k2tog, p1*; repeat around
Row 4:    *k2tog*; repeat around
Row 5:  (optional)    *k2tog*; repeat around

Finish: Cut working yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail.  Draw the tail through the remaining stitches, cinch closed and secure.  Weave in ends and share.

**  If you prefer, use the pattern for just the brim of the hat, working it as long as you like, then switching to stockinette for the top of the hat.  **

 If using 5-weight yarn, use size 10.5 needles and cast on 65.  

If using 4-weight yarn, use size 7 needles and cast on 90.  

If using 3-weight yarn, use size 5 needles and cast on 100 stitches.   
The pattern is worked over 5 stitches.  

Introducing Amethyst Array!

Schnapps has been powering his little paws through lots of yarn!  He has been busy helping me get ready for Christmas also.  We've shipped out so many hats lately, but there is still such a need for more..........so, he grabs some yarn and whips up hats whenever he gets a chance to rest!  

This is a very busy time of year for many, but please try to take some time to do something for someone else.  And make sure, if you are using our patterns, that you make at least a couple of hats to donate to those in need.

This hat is knit using Lion Brand Hometown USA, but instructions are included for other yarn weights as well.  Various color combinations would work well as would just a single color. 

Schnapps also designed two other hats this weekend.  These patterns will be shared later......and all the PDF's will be shared in a fund raising e-book.

Amethyst Array

You will need 2 different colors of 6-weight yarn and size US 13 circular needles or some other combination listed below. 

Abbreviations:
s1:  slip one stitch, holding yarn at back of work
k2tog:  knit 2 stitches together

Using Color A, cast on 48 stitches, place marker and join, taking care not to twist stitches.

Work Brim:  Using Color A
Row 1:   *k2, p2*; repeat around
Repeat Row 1 until your work measures 1.5 to  2 inches in length, or longer if you prefer.  The brim can be folded over as above or left longer as on the next page.

Work Body of Hat:
Color A:  knit one row
Switch to Color B
Row 1:   *s1, k1*; repeat around
Row 2:   *s1, p1*; repeat
Row 3:   *k1, s1*; repeat around
Row 4:   *p1, s1*; repeat around

Repeat Rows 1 -4 until piece is about 6 to 6.5 inches in length.  End on a Row 2 or 4 and then knit one row still using Color B.

Work Crown:
Switch back to Color A
Row 1:    knit all stitches
Repeat Row 1 until piece is about 7 inches in length.

Crown Decrease:  use dpn’s when needed
Row 1:   *k6, k2tog *; repeat around
Row 2:   *k5, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 3:   *k4, k2tog *; repeat around
Row 4:   *k3, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 5:   *k2, k2tog *; repeat around
Row 6:   *k1, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 7:   *k2tog*; repeat around

Finish: Cut working yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail.  Draw the tail through the remaining stitches, cinch closed and secure.  Weave in ends and share.

If using 5-weight yarn, use size 10.5 needles and cast on 64. 

If using 4-weight yarn, use size 7 needles and cast on 88. 

If using 3-weight yarn, use size 5 needles and cast on 104 stitches.  

The pattern is worked over 2 stitches,  but the crown decrease is worked over 8 stitches. 

Feel free to use just 1 color.

Introducing the Smooth Sailing Scarf! It works with any yarn!

Schnapps made me a light-weight cotton and line blend scarf to help cover my neck when I'm out in the sun.  This is such a simple scarf......and can easily be made with any type of yarn.  The lacy design gives it some texture and interest, but it's just all garter stitch, similar to the Shawl for All, which was his inspiration.  Once you cast on, there is no counting, no worrying about which row you are on, absolutely no problems at all.  Smooth sailing from cast on to cast off!

You could make one of these to match the Beach Day hat.  You'll be protected, face and neck from the sun.  You could also make this in a super bulky yarn and have a cute winter accessory.  Or use lace weight yarn and make a delicate scarf to dress up any outfit.  Your choice of needle will be what makes this scarf light and airy, no matter what yarn you use.

We used CotLin yarn from Knit Picks for this model.  It's a 3-weight yarn that is cool and comfy and easy to care for.  This scarf used less than one 123 yard skein.  Depending on what yarn you use and how wide you want to make it, your yardage will change.  Experiment with it and see what you come up with.  Add stripes if you like.... customize it and have fun.

Smooth Sailing Scarf

You will need 3 weight yarn and size US 13 circular needles.  Scarf is knit flat, but the circulars are needed to accommodate the large number of stitches.   

This scarf is about 9 feet long and about 3 inches wide.....which was what we wanted.  If you want a shorter scarf, cast on fewer stitches......I doubt you'd want a longer one, but if you do, cast on more stitches.  Just be sure to use a needle that is several sizes larger than your yarn calls for.

Cast on 227 stitches.

Knit every row until you like the width.

Cast off knit-wise.

That's it! 

 

If you are using different yarn, adjust accordingly.  

For 1-weight  or 2-weight, use size 8 or 9 needles. 

For 4-weight yarn, use size 17 needles. 

For 5-weight yarn, use size 35 needles.

For 6-weight yarn, use size 50 needles.

Cast on depending on how long you want your scarf to be.
