Introducing Ribbon Candy!

The wonderful people at Lion Brand Yarn sent us some Hometown USA to make more chemo caps with and Schnapps picked out 2 skeins and sat down last football Sunday to make a hat.  Since Thanksgiving is just around the corner, we wanted to make sure we shared this pattern now, so you can knit one or two or three up over the long holiday weekend.  Be sure to donate one to brighten someone's day!

Ribbon Candy is eye catching in these bright colors, but I think it would look equally as nice in more muted tones too.  Experiment with colors and see what you come up with.  Send us some pictures of your creations please.  You could even make the brim a completely different color and add even more contrast.

As always, we have included instructions for other yarn weights.  I think all yarn weights could work equally as well for this pattern.........although giving extremely different looks.

Ribbon Candy

 You will need 2 different colors of 6-weight yarn and size US 13 circular needles or some other combination listed below.

Abbreviations:
k2tog:  knit 2 stitches together

Using Color B, cast on 48 stitches, place marker and join, taking care not to twist stitches.

Work Brim:  Using Color B
Row 1:  knit all stitches
Row 2:  purl all stitches
Repeat Rows 1 & 2 until your work measures 2 to 2.5 inches in length, or longer if you prefer.

Work Body of Hat:
Rows 1, 2, 5, 6, 9& 10:  Color A:  knit all
Row 3:   Color B:  *k3, slip 1 purlwise with yarn at back)*; repeat around
Row 4:  Color B:   *p3, slip 1 knitwise with yarn at back*; repeat around
Row 7:  Color B:   *k1, slip 1 purlwise with yarn at back, k2*; repeat around
Row 8:  Color B:   *p1, , slip 1 knitwise with yarn at back, p2*; repeat around
Rows 3 and 10  if desired until piece is about 7 to 7.5 inches in length.

Decrease Crown:  use dpn’s when needed Using Color A
Row 1:    knit all stitches
Row 2:   *k6, k2tog *; repeat around
Row 3:   *k5, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 4:   *k4, k2tog *; repeat around
Row 5:   *k3, k2tog *; repeat around
Row 6:   *k2, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 7:   *k1, k2tog *; repeat around
Row 8:   *k2tog*; repeat around

Finish: Cut working yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail.  Draw the tail through the remaining stitches, cinch closed and secure.  Weave in ends and share.

 If using 5-weight yarn, use size 10.5 needles and cast on 60.

If using 4-weight yarn, use size 7 needles and cast on 88.  

If using 3-weight yarn, use size 5 needles and cast on 100 stitches.   


Use 2 strands of 4- or 5-weight yarn or 3 strands of 3-weight yarn held together as one strand and work pattern as written if you want to use other yarn weights and have the hat look like the model

The pattern is worked over 4 stitches.

  

Introducing Frothy Hope!

Spring is here, even if it was in the 20's last night in Delaware!  That means it's time to break out some lighter weight yarn and come up with some new designs.  Schnapps came up with this frothy, foamy pattern last week and we wanted to share it.  

This was knit with Caron Simply Soft, but you could use any worsted or sport weight yarn.  Heavier yarns won't really work for this pattern, since it is a 20 row design.  It's an easy pattern to make though, don't let the number of rows intimidate you.

 

 As you can see, Schnapps has added to his super-hero t-shirt collection.  He has Superman and now he has Batman also, so when we go out, we're Batman & Robin.  :)

You will need 4- weight yarn and size 7 circular needles or some combination listed below.

Cast on 80 stitches, place marker and join, taking care not to twist stitches.

Work Brim:

 The pattern is worked over 10 stitches.   As written, the pattern makes an adult size hat.  Because of the 20 row repeat, this pattern won’t work for super bulky or chunky weight yarn.

To knit this using sport weight yarn, use size 5 needles and cast on 100 stitches.

To make it child size, use worsted yarn, size 7 needles and cast on 60 stitches.  Adjust in increments of 10 stitches for individual sizes.

Introducing Hopeful Treads!

Schnapps and I have been busy lately, but things are calming down and we hope to get back to designing many new things.  He made this hat yesterday and everyone in our Facebook group really seemed to like it, so we're sharing the pattern now.  This color just said "SPRING!" to me, but it would work well in any color.  And this is a pattern that works equally as well for men or women.

This was knit using KnitPicks Brava Bulky yarn, which is super soft and great to work with.  It's also easy care - machine wash and dry.  The pattern has info for all yarn weights though.

 Schnapps got a much needed hair cut this past weekend and it was just in time.  The warmer weather seems to have arrived and we're getting to spend more time outdoors - playing ball, taking long walks and knitting too.

We hope to start a new book of never before seen patterns too that will be used as a fundraiser.  We'll keep you posted about that.

Rows 2 & 4:  *k4, p4*; repeat around
Rows 6 & 8:  k2, *p4, k4*; repeat to end (last repeat will end with k2 instead of k4)

Schnapps has been busy, happily making hats again.  We've got so many different things that we'd like to make, but somehow, hats just keep pulling us in.  This is one of his latest creations.  Thank you Lani for the name!  It's a little warmer this week here in Delaware, but more cold air is headed this way.  It's been a brutal winter in so many places that we are trying to get as many warm hats as possible out to those who need them.

Introducing Frosted Hope!

Schnapps and I apologize for being behind schedule!  We've been very busy and can't really believe that it's already mid-February.  We have a shawl that we are working on for a local auction and then we will be back to hat patterns, we promise.  Schnapps has lots of ideas for new hats, but I keep putting him to work doing other things.

This hat/scarf set was knit for the Kent County Public Library's Quarter Auction!

This is a hat he made a few weeks ago that slipped through the cracks.  This was knit using super bulky yarn, but the pattern includes details for all yarn weights.

Introducing Violaceous!

Well, Schnapps designed this one a couple of weeks ago, but finally I have the pattern ready to go up.  I try to stay away from names that use the color of the model, but we just couldn't come up with one that seemed right.  Feel free to make it in any color you choose!

Schnapps and I have been tagging all the hats that come in and turning right around and shipping them out to those who need them.  This year we have an increased demand for hats, so please, take some time and make at least one hat for someone battling cancer.  Drop them off locally or send them to me and Schnapps, but make a difference for someone.  Especially if you have used any of my patterns before..........pay it forward and warm someone up!  Schnapps would appreciate it!

Introducing Verdant Hope!

It has been chilly and snowy in Delaware this week and I am finally getting around to posting Schnapps latest hat........well, he has another new one finished already too, but I'm a bit behind.

So many people are in need of chemo caps, especially in this cold weather.  Please, if you use any of my patterns for any reason, take the time to make a hat (or several!) and donate them to your local cancer treatment center.  If you don't know where to send them, you can always send them to me and Schnapps and we will get them to those who need them most.  Let's all make a difference this year!

Introducing Pistachio (or ANY flavor!) Schnapps!

Well, Schnapps sat me down today and told me that he is feeling a bit left out that none of his patterns have his name on them.  So, this one is especially dedicated to the Miniature Schnauzer who has designed scores of hats for us!  He hopes you don't mind and he encourages you to make one in every 'flavor' imaginable!!  :)

This was knit using Lion Brand Baby's First yarn which is a super soft cotton/acrylic blend that is machine washable and dryable.  One skein made the whole hat with quite a bit left over.  We've included instructions for all yarn weights and I think this would look equally as nice in a variegated or striped yarn.

Hats and blankets keep pouring in!  We're over 10,781 chemo caps, up to 494 Finn Hats and  1,087 blankets.  I'm stocking up on warm hats now to have on hand to ship out for the cooler weather.  And we've sent to many individuals as well as to many treatment centers that need caps.  Just let us know if you know of a place that needs caps and we'll do our best to get some to them right away.

Repeat Rows 1 - 4  until piece is 6.5  to 7 inches in length or longer if you want a slouchy hat
 

Decrease Crown:  switch to dpns when needed
Row 1: *k2, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 2: *k1, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 3: *k2tog*; repeat around
Row 4: *k2tog*; repeat around

Finish: Cut working yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail.  Draw the tail through the remaining stitches, cinch closed and secure.  Weave in ends and pass along some love with a hug from Schnapps!

The pattern is worked over 4 stitches.

To knit this using 6-weight yarn, use size 13 needles and cast on 48 stitches. 

To knit this using worsted weight yarn, use size 9 needles and cast on 80 stitches. 

To make it child size, use worsted yarn, size 8 needles and cast on 60 stitches.  Adjust in increments of 4 stitches for individual sizes.

To knit this using sport weight yarn, use size 5 needles and cast on 120 stitches.

Introducing Popsicle!

 Schnapps knit this patriotic hat for the 4th of July.  He used Sugar n' Cream Stripes and one ball makes a hat!

Then he knit it again in a different colorway to show just how very different the same pattern can look when knit with a different yarn.  This too though is Sugar n' Cream Stripes, although I'm sure it would look nice in a solid color also.  I did notice that Schnapps cheated a bit and cut the yarn for the very top in order to have the color he wanted at the tip, but it would be fine to just use the yarn as is.

The red, white and blue one reminded me of the rocket shaped ice pops and the peach colored one brought to mind a creamsicle to me, so I got Schnapps' permission to name this one myself and I went with Popsicle.

It's hot and humid in Delaware these days and Schnapps isn't venturing out of the house much at all.  We've been busy working on MEGSTRONG items and tagging all the gorgeous hats and blankets that come in from all of you.

Some hair clips, eyeglass chains and an octopus for MEGSTRONG!

Even with this super hot weather, I'm making hats for the cold weather too.  I'm starting to stock up on heavy weight hats to have ready to ship out in September (which will be here before you know it!).  There are a LOT of sites depending on us to send hats to get their patients through the winter.  Remember, we collect ALL hats, ALL the time so that we are ready to help anyone who needs them.

 Popsicle

You will need worsted weight yarn and size 8 circular needles and dpns or another combination listed below.

Abbreviations:
yo:  yarn over
sk2psso:  slip one stitch knitwise, knit the next 2 stitches, then pass the slipped stitch over both knit stitches
k2tog:  knit 2 stitches together as one

Cast on 81 stitches, place marker and join, taking care not to twist stitches.

Work Stockinette:
Row 1:  knit all stitches
Repeat Row 1 until piece measures about 2.5 inches in length. 

Work Pattern:
Row 1:  *yo, sk2psso*; repeat around
Row 2 :  knit all stitches
Row 3 :  *sk2psso, yo*; repeat around
Row 4:  knit all stitches

Repeat Rows 1 - 4 until piece is about 5 inches in length.
Work Stockinette:
Row 1:  knit all stitches
Repeat Row 1 until piece measures about 6.5 inches in length

Decrease Crown: use dpns when needed
Row 1:  *k7, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 2:  *k6, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 3:  *k5, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 4:  *k4, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 5:  *k3, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 6:  *k2, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 7:  *k1, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 8:  *k2tog*; repeat around

Finish: Cut working yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail.  Draw the tail through the remaining stitches, cinch closed and secure.  Weave in ends and give it to someone who could use a sweet treat!



he pattern is worked over 3 stitches.  The crown decrease is worked over 9 stitches.

To  knit this using 6-weight yarn, use size 13 needles and cast on 45 stitches.

To knit this using 5-weight yarn, use size 10.5 needles and cast on 63 stitches. 

To make it child size, use worsted yarn, size 8 needles and cast on 63 stitches.  Adjust in increments of 9 stitches for individual sizes.

To knit this using sport weight yarn, use size 5 needles and cast on 108 stitches.
