Legacy

We lost our beloved Schnapps on June 21, 2018.  Our hearts are broken.  We are just so very sad and hurting so much right now.  He was the absolute best and he brought out the best in everyone else too.  I'm not quite sure how we will navigate through our days without him.......it's incredibly difficult and full of tears.  We are trying to hold onto our happy memories......because Schnapps was the happiest boy ever and he brought us so much joy, every single day. 

I'm truly not sure where Delaware Head Huggers and Kozy Kovers for Kids will go from here.  Schnapps was the inspiration, creative force and love behind all that.  Right now, I am continuing.  That might change in the future.  I am truly lost without my boy.  

This was the last hat that we knit together.......honestly I am finding it difficult to pick up my knitting at all without him sitting by my side.  I know that he would want me to share this pattern though.  We were working on another book to publish..........but I wanted to put this one here for everyone.  I will add it to a book if that happens in the future.

This was knit using KnitPicks Comfy Sport yarn and size 4 needles.  Instructions for other variations are, of course, included too.  

Remember,  we have three books published on Amazon in paperback and Kindle versions.  Paperbacks are printed in full color on 8.5 x 11 paper and will be delivered right to your door.  These could be good gift ideas for knitters you love.

You will need 2 colors of 2-weight yarn and size US 4 needles, or some other combination listed below.  

Abbreviations:

k2tog:  knit 2 stitches together

Using Color B, cast on 120 stitches, place marker and join, taking care not to twist stitches.

Work Brim:  Using Color B

Row 1:   knit all stitches

Row 2:   purl all stitches 

Repeat Rows 1 & 2 until your work measures about 3 inches, or longer if you prefer, in length.  

Work Pattern:  all stitches are knit stitches.  The numbers and letter refer to color:

Row 1:   *2A, 3B, 2A, 1B*; repeat around

Row 2:  *1A, 1B, 4A, 1B, 1A*; repeat around 

Row 3:  *1B, 2A, 3B, 2A*; repeat around 

Row 4:   *2A, 1B, 4A, 1B*; repeat around 

Row 5:   *2A, 1B, 4A, 1B*; repeat around

 Finish: Cut working yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail.  Draw the tail through the remaining stitches, cinch closed and secure.  Weave in ends and share.

If using 6-weight yarn, use size 13 needles and cast on 48.

If using 5-weight yarn, use size 10.5 needles and cast on 72 

  

If using 4-weight yarn, use size 8 needles and cast on 96.   

If using 3-weight yarn, use size 6 needles and cast on 112.  

This  pattern is worked over 8 stitches.  Adjust accordingly for size differences. 

Introducing Reticulated Hope!

2017 is here and I just know great things will happen!  

We ended 2016 with a grand total of 22,297 chemo caps (3,110 in 2016) and 2,287 blankets for foster children and kids in crisis (272 in 2016).  When Schnapps and I started this back in 2010 we never dreamed that it would grow so much.  Thank you to everyone who helps and to all of you who use our patterns to help your local communities.  We hope that we can all challenge and inspire each other to keep creating comforting, beautiful things to spread some happiness.

Schnapps played around with some 6-weight yarn this weekend during football and came up with this pattern.  Amazing how a different yarn gives the same pattern an entirely different look, isn't it?  You could do the brim one color and the crown another too.  Remember, be creative and experiment........worst that happens is you rip out something and start over........most times you come up with something wonderful!

Very simple and super quick to knit, especially in super bulky yarn, the pattern includes info for other yarn weights as always.

Reticulated Hope

  You will need 6-weight yarn and size US 13 circular needles or some other combination listed below. 

 

Abbreviations:
s1:  slip one stitch

Cast on 48 stitches, place marker and join, taking care not to twist stitches.

Work Brim:
Rows 1 & 2:   knit all stitches
Row 3:  *s1 knitwise, k1*; repeat around
Row 4:   *s1 purlwise with yarn in back, p1*; repeat around

Repeat Rows 1 - 4  until piece is anywhere from 3 to 6.5 inches in length, depending on what you like best.

Work Crown:
Row 1:   knit all stitches
Repeat Row 1 until the hat is about 7.5 inches in length.

Decrease Crown:  use dpn’s when needed
Row 1:   *k6, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 2:    *k5, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 3:   *k4, k2tog*; repeat around

Introducing Pilasters!

Schnapps wanted to be sure to share one last pattern for 2016 with everyone.  It's hard to believe that there are only a few more days until we ring in 2017.  The years seem to go by more quickly all the time.   We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and we wish for nothing but great things for you in 2017!

Schnapps and I were disappointed this month......Lion Brand Yarn had contacted us in August and told us that they were doing a huge "Yarn Heroes Campaign" and they wanted to feature us in part of it.  Apparently, a person who worked for Lion Brand had been following this blog and had seen all the patterns that Schnapps shares.  They said that they were supporting several charity crafters and were looking to be partners by donating yarn on a regular basis and showcasing our work.  There followed months of answering questions and giving information......then a box of yarn was delivered to help us create more hats.......it was suggested that Schnapps get a "yarn hero" cape.....and then nothing happened.

It turns out that Lion Brand changed their minds and massively scaled back the Yarn Hero Campaign, leaving it with just professional bloggers sharing a pattern that can be used for charity crafting.  All the actual charity crafters were not going to be featured and the promise of yarn for the foreseeable future changed to a statement that we should submit an application if we want free yarn.  The original person who contacted us is no longer at Lion Brand.  It's disappointing for us to realize how close a major company was to really making a large difference in the charity crafting world, but not really surprising.  There are so many of you who do so much............but we do it to help others, not for recognition from companies.  

So, Schnapps is busy using the yarn that was originally sent and we are back to purchasing yarn when it's on sale to keep our charity work going.  Pilasters is his latest pattern and it's super simple and fast to knit.

 Pilasters

You will need 6-weight yarn and size US 13 circular needles or some other combination listed below. 

Abbreviations:
k2tog:  knit 2 stitches together

Cast on 48 stitches, place marker and join, taking care not to twist stitches.

Work Brim:
You are going to purl 3 stitches together, then without dropping them, knit the same 3 stitches together and purl the same 3 stitches together again.  After the second p3tog, you drop the stitches from the LH needle.

Row 1:  * (p3tog, k3tog, p3tog) in the same 3 stitches, k1*
Row 2:   knit all stitches
Repeat Rows 1 - 2  until piece is about 4.5 to 5 inches in length.  Feel free to adapt the length as you like, making it longer or shorter.
Work Hat:
Row 1:   knit all stitches
Repeat Row 1 until the hat is about 7.5 inches in length.

Decrease Crown:  use dpn’s when needed

Row 1:   *k2, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 2:    *k1, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 3:   *k2tog*; repeat around
Row 4:   *k2tog*; repeat around
Repeat Row 4 if desired if you use a thinner yarn.

Finish: Cut working yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail.  Draw the tail through the remaining stitches, cinch closed and secure.  Weave in ends and share.

If using 5-weight yarn, use size 10.5 needles and cast on 64. 

If using 4-weight yarn, use size 7 needles and cast on 80. 

If using 3-weight yarn, use size 5 needles and cast on 100 stitches.

Introducing Hyperbola!

The weather is finally starting to be a bit cooler here in Delaware.....not cool enough for us yet, but at least not so hot.  Schnapps came up with this hat in this fabulous shade of blue during a Football Sunday.  It's made with 6-weight, super bulky yarn, but there are instructions for all yarn weights too.

Operation Bottle Beanies is going strong.......it's growing slowly, but we are happy that it's taking off!  New businesses may be added soon too!  Remember, we need LOTS of tiny hats!  We need themed hats for Fall and Winter such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah and more.  We need farm themed hats like bee hives, pumpkins, apples, tomatoes and other fruits and vegetables.  We need adorable hats of any theme or type!  Sizes vary since there are many different items sold in the store; apple butter, local honey,  jams, oils, pickles and so many other yummy things.  Please help us with this special project that is very important to Schnapps and me.

Abbreviations:
CB4:  move 2 stitches to cable needle and hold to back.  Knit 2 from left needle, then knit 2 from cable needle.

CF4: move 2 stitches to cable needle and hold to front.  Knit 2 from left needle, then knit 2 from cable needle.

p2tog:  purl 2 stitches together as one

Cast on 48 stitches, place marker and join, taking care not to twist stitches.

Work Brim: 
Row 1:  *k2, p2*; repeat around
Repeat Row 1 for 1.5 to  2 inches

Work Pattern:
Foundation Row:  purl all stitches
Row 1: k4, CB4, CF4, k4, purl to end
Rows 2, 4 & 6:  k16, purl to end
Row 3:  k2, CB4, k4, CF4, k2, purl to end
Row 5:  CB4, k8, CF4, purl to end

Repeat Rows 1 - 6 until piece measures 7.5 to 8  inches in length. 

Decrease Crown:  use dpn’s when needed
Row 1:  *p2, p2tog*; repeat around

The pattern is worked over 16 stitches.    I prefer the look of the one design, but you can repeat the design if you wish.  The way the pattern is written, you can repeat it 3 times.

  

Introducing Crossroads!

Two new patterns today!  Schnapps has been busy....it's been so hot here that he's been hiding in the cool house playing with yarn.  Here is his original plan and this time he made sure to double check his math!  :)  Made with Lion Brand Hometown USA, this hat knits up super fast and is just a one row pattern!  I really like the way the crown decrease looks.  Other yarn weight instructions are included also.

Cast on 50 stitches, place marker and join, taking care not to twist stitches.


Work Pattern:
Row 1:  *p3, k2tbl*, repeat around

Repeat Row 1 until piece measures 7.5 to 8.5 inches in length.

Decrease Crown:  use dpn’s when needed
Row 1:  *p1, p2tog, k2tbl*; repeat around
Row 2:   *p2tog, k2togtbl*; repeat around
Row 3:   *k2togtbl*; repeat around


Finish: Cut working yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail.  Draw the tail through the remaining stitches, cinch closed and secure.  Weave in ends and give it to someone special!

Cinching:  Cut an 8 inch piece of yarn, either matching or contrasting for a different look and thread it through a yarn needle.  At about halfway up the length of the hat, bring the yarn needle up on the outer side of one knit section and then down on the outer side of the next knit section.  Wrap the yarn three times around, cinching the 2 knit sections together.  Take care not to cinch too tightly since that could distort the fit of the hat.  Tie off the yarn on the inside of the hat and weave in end.  Repeat for every 2 knit sections around the hat.

If using 5-weight yarn, use size 10.5 needles and cast on 70. 

If using 4-weight yarn, use size 7 needles and cast on 90. 

If using 3-weight yarn, use size 5 needles and cast on 110. 

If making a child’s hat, use 4 weight yarn, size 8 needles and cast on 70 stitches.  Adjust in increments of 10.

The pattern is worked over 10 stitches.

Introducing Sea & Sand!

We can not believe it is already June!  Do you realize there are less than 30 weeks until Christmas?!  2015 is flying by, but Schnapps is busy knitting all the time.  We had some gifts that had to be made and we just had work done on our home which kept us busy so we were not posting new patterns.  Things are calming down now and we are going through our cotton and cotton blend yarn stash and making new hats!  Schnapps made this one yesterday and it just reminded me of the sea and the sand.

He used 2 strands of Knit Picks CotLin yarn worked as one throughout.  We love that yarn - it's cool and crisp and soft.  There are instructions for how to adjust this pattern for other yarn weights below.  You could certainly knit this in just one color also and other color combinations would look great as well.

 You will need 120 or so yards of a sport weight yarn and size 10.5 needles.

C2L: next stitch to cable needle at front, knit 1 from LH needle, the slip the stitch purwise from the cable needle (yarn at back)

Holding 2 strands of Color A together, cast on 65 stitches, place marker and join, taking care not to twist stitches.


Work Brim Using Color A:
Row 1:  knit all stitches
Repeat Row 1 until piece is 3 to 3.5 inches long.


Switch to Color B:

Foundation Row:  knit all stitches

Row 1:  *k1, C2R, k2, C2R, k1, C2L, K3*; repeat around
Row 2 and all even rows:  knit all stitches
Row 3:   *k4, C2R, k1, C2L, k2*; repeat around

This hat was worked using 2 strands of 3 weight yarn held together as one.  This could easily be changed to one strand of 5-weight yarn.

To use 6-weight yarn, use size 13 needles and cast on 52 stitches.  You might prefer to start your crown decrease at 7.5 to 8  inches and begin with decrease Row 10.

To use 4-weight yarn, use size 8 needles and cast on 78 stitches.  Repeat pattern rows if desired.

To use one strand of 3 weight yarn, use size 5 needles, cast on 104 stitches and repeat pattern rows if desired.

The pattern is worked over 13 stitches. 

Introducing Frothy Hope!

Spring is here, even if it was in the 20's last night in Delaware!  That means it's time to break out some lighter weight yarn and come up with some new designs.  Schnapps came up with this frothy, foamy pattern last week and we wanted to share it.  

This was knit with Caron Simply Soft, but you could use any worsted or sport weight yarn.  Heavier yarns won't really work for this pattern, since it is a 20 row design.  It's an easy pattern to make though, don't let the number of rows intimidate you.

 

 As you can see, Schnapps has added to his super-hero t-shirt collection.  He has Superman and now he has Batman also, so when we go out, we're Batman & Robin.  :)

Decrease Crown:  use dpn’s when needed
Row 1: *k8, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 2: *k7 k2tog*; repeat around
Row 3: *k6, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 4: *k5, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 5: *k4 k2tog*; repeat around
Row 6: *k3, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 7: *k2, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 7: *k1, k2tog*; repeat around
Row 8:  *k2tog*; repeat around

Finish: Cut working yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail.  Draw the tail through the remaining stitches, cinch closed and secure.  Weave in ends and give it to someone special!
 

 The pattern is worked over 10 stitches.   As written, the pattern makes an adult size hat.  Because of the 20 row repeat, this pattern won’t work for super bulky or chunky weight yarn.

To knit this using sport weight yarn, use size 5 needles and cast on 100 stitches.

To make it child size, use worsted yarn, size 7 needles and cast on 60 stitches.  Adjust in increments of 10 stitches for individual sizes.
