Introducing the Megstrong Square and the Body Nuzzler Square

Schnapps has been busy working on some blanket squares for Meagan's blanket.  He's got new hat ideas in mind, but is finishing up the squares first.  He and I are apparently a bit challenged when it comes to getting things perfectly square and exactly 12 inches, but we're getting better!

These patterns can easily be used for whole blankets, throws, shawls or scarves or even wash cloths.  We've included instructions for changing the size.  The cast on number of stitches was for my 12 inch square.  Check your gauge if making a square.  Multiply the number of cast on stitches for the width you want.  For example, if making a baby blanket that you want 36 inches wide, cast on 3 times the number of stitches I used.  If you want a 60 inch wide throw, cast on 5 times the number, etc.

The first square was knit using Lion Brand Pound of Love in a pale yellow.  I'm calling it the Megstrong Blanket Square.

The second square was knit using Caron Simply Soft in a pastel aqua.  We had about 7 inches of it done before we realized that it was 13 inches wide, so we had to rip it all out and start over.  This square is knit using the pattern from the Noggin Nuzzler Cap, so I'm calling it the Body Nuzzler Square.

Schnapps and I ask all of you to keep Meagan and her family and friends in your thoughts and prayers each day.  Please send some hugs, hope and love to them all.

If you're not a fan of Delaware Head Huggers yet, stop by and "Like" our Facebook page.  Help us name the patterns and see all the beautiful hats that are donated.  Stop by Kozy Kovers for Kids Facebook page too!  We welcome everyone to join us.  Stop by and say hello.  You can always reach Schnapps or me at robin@delawareheadhuggers.org too.  We love to hear from everyone!

The Megstrong Blanket Square
This was knit using worsted weight yarn and size 8 needles.  To get a 12 inch square, I cast on 56 stitches.  The pattern must be multiples of 3 plus 2, so adjust accordingly.

yo = yarn over

Row 1:  Knit all stitches

Row 2:  k1, *p3tog but leave on needle, yo, then p3tog (the same 3 stitches) again*; repeat from * to * to last stitch, k1

Row 3:  Knit all stitches

Row 4:  Knit all stitches

Repeat Rows 1 - 4 to desired length, ending on any row but Row 2.  Bind off all stitches knit wise.

The Body Nuzzler Square
This was knit using worsted weight yarn and size 8 needles.  To get a 12 inch square I cast on 54 stitches.  The pattern must be in multiples of 4 plus 2, so adjust accordingly.

Row 1:  k2, *p2, k2*; repeat from * to * across row

Row 2:  p2, *k2, p2*; repeat from * to * across row

Row 3:   p2, *k2, p2*; repeat from * to * across row

Row 4:  k2, *p2, k2*; repeat from * to * across row

Repeat Rows 1 - 4 to desired length, ending on any row.  Bind off in pattern.

The Braided Hope Blanket Square or more!

Schnapps and I have been busy this week!  We packed all the gorgeous MEGSTRONG items that we had and shipped them to NY for the fundraiser.  There was over 26 pounds in those boxes!  I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of generosity and love from so many!  THANK YOU each and every one of you who participated!  We have toys, household items such as washcloths and potholders, jewelry, scarves, bookmarks and just so many beautiful items crafted with hugs, hope and love.  All are posted on our Facebook page if you'd like to see them.

MEGSTRONG boxes headed to NY!

Then, the Amazing Miriam had a brilliant idea!  She suggested making a blanket for Meagan.  All these items will sell to help Meagan, but sometimes, you just need the warmth of a hug from a handmade blanket.  So, some of us are making blanket squares that Miriam has so generously offered to put together into a blanket for Meagan.  We're hoping to have the squares done and to Miriam by August 18th or so, which I know is short notice, but if anyone would like to participate, we're doing 12 inch squares, either knit or crochet, made from worsted weight, machine washable and dryable yarn in only pastel colors.  Any pastel is fine, but please keep to pastels only so they coordinate well with each other.  And please only use worsted weight yarn for continuity! Also, please use a 12 x 12 template to make sure it's the right size and send a very long tail or small ball of yarn in case Miriam needs to crochet a border.  If you'd like to send a square, email me at robin@delawareheadhuggers.org and I can send you Miriam's address, or you can just send the squares to me, as you do hats and blankets and I will forward them.

Since I really like the Braided Hope hat pattern, I wanted to do a Braided Hope blanket square.  This can easily be increased to do an entire blanket also.  It's a very easy pattern and no cables are involved at all.  My square seemed to be a perfect 12 inch square, but the ribbing pulls in on itself a bit after it is blocked making it slightly smaller.  Now, Miriam says that it should still work fine in the blanket, but keep it in mind if you are trying to make this to an exact size.

Now we're working on a new pattern for another square!  We'll let you know how it turns out!

Braided Hope Blanket

I used Vanna's Choice worsted weight yarn and size 9 needles.  If using other worsted weight and size 8 needles, you will need to add more stitches.  I cast on 50 - you need a multiple of 4 plus 2.

Row 1:  p2, *k2, p2*; repeat from * to * across row

Row 2:  k2, *p2, k2*; repeat from * to * across row

Row 3:  p2, *k2tog then without dropping the stitches off you left hand needle knit just the first stitch then drop both; p2*;  repeat from * to * across row

Row 4:   k2, *p2, k2*; repeat from * to * across row

Repeat Rows 1 - 4 until desired length.  End on a Row 3 and bind off in pattern.

If making this a blanket, cast on for the appropriate size.  For example, for a 36 inch blanket, cast on 150;  for a 48 inch blanket, cast on 202; for a 60 inch blanket cast on 250, etc.  If you are making a square and are concerned about the slight shrink due to the ribbing, you can always cast on an extra 4 stitches to begin with.  That should give you plenty of room for a bit of pulling.

If using other yarn, check your gauge and just remember that this pattern is a multiple of 4 plus 2 and have fun!

And yes, you could make this into a scarf by simply working the 50 stitches for however long you want your scarf to be!

It could even be a washcloth or a dishcloth!

Week 8 - Goal Met & a Blanket Bonanza!

I can hardly believe that this is already Week 8 of 2012!  Although it's already Saturday, I completed my second hat for the week!  I still haven't finished the blanket I'm working on, but it's getting there.  It's been a busy week with other commitments, but at least I'm getting some knitting done every day.

The most amazing thing this week was the 33 blankets that came in for Kozy Kovers for Kids!  My library called and said they had a lot of donations, but I was not expecting all this!

This brings the grand total for blankets to 693 with more coming in every week.  We'll be giving 40 or so to the local Emergency Department to have on hand for any little patients who come in suffering from abuse or neglect.  I only wish you could see all the details of these beautiful blankets.  Our Facebook page has more photos with more details!

Along with the enormous number of blankets, I received another 17 hats this week, bringing Delaware Head Huggers to a whopping 5,991 hats!  A few boxes will be shipping out this week, bringing warmth to those who need it.

Remember, all are welcome to join us in some way - we love to see new people and are grateful when more people hear about us.  So, spread the word!  And, as always, if you or anyone you know is in need of chemo caps, please feel free to contact me directly at robin@delawareheadhuggers.org and I will be happy to ship some out.

Goal Met - Week 7! Fundraiser Begins!

Week 7 is not yet over, but I know I will be working on my blanket this weekend.  I did manage to finish 2 hats this week though.........the gray one is the Cozy Cobblestone Cap found in my previous post and the multicolored one is just a toasty loom knit one.  Amazingly, 70 more hats came in this week so far, bringing our total to a whopping 5,974!  We'll soon be over 6,000!  And they keep on coming in.  As always I am in awe of the talent of all donors and the beautiful items they so lovingly donate to Delaware Head Huggers!

We began our first impromptu fundraiser this week too.  Some craft items; mostly cross stitch, are posted on our Facebook page with prices starting at $1 and the highest being $5.  These are unopened kits and other items.  More to come too.  If you'd like to do some shopping, where ALL proceeds go to Delaware Head Huggers and Kozy Kovers for Kids, stop by the Craft Item Fundraiser.   All items were donated, so all money collected will be proceeds! We're PayPal friendly too!  The money goes towards postage costs and the cost of printing the tags needed for the hats and blankets.

I've got lots of ideas for new hat patterns and hopefully I will have another one or two to add soon.

In the meantime, please join us if you can.  We love to find new friends on Facebook, have new visitors to our website and have new crafters send in items.  Both websites have easy donation buttons and directions for where to drop items off if you live in Delaware and where to send them if you live in other states.

Goal Met - Week 6!

I've been working on a blanket for Kozy Kovers for Kids, but I can't neglect Delaware Head Huggers, so I've been splitting my knitting time between the two.  I made 3 hats this week.....all on a loom.  The pink fuzzy one is a bit funkier than I usually make, but the yarn was donated, so I wanted to try it out.  Hopefully someone will find it to be the perfect accessory!

This week there was some major miscommunication with a hospital about them accepting hats, but luckily I was able to get that all straightened out and hats will be headed there shortly.

Each individual hat is tagged with a card that states it is a gift from Delaware Head Huggers......I'm not sure how anyone would think another group made our hats...............but, as long as patients are getting the caps they need, it will all work out just fine!  Sometimes I think anyone who answers a telephone should have to take a basic courtesy class before being allowed to say "hello".  If people would just think before they spoke, so many unpleasant situations would just never happen!

On a much more positive note, this is an excerpt from an email I received from a center which had received hats recently:
I can’t tell you how much the patients appreciate these.  They are so touched when we offer it to them and they like to choose their own style.   The assortment is so nice,  one is lovelier than the next---so thanks again to you and all the busy hands that make these wonderful hats.  I hope the volunteers know how appreciated these little gifts are and that our patients are very grateful.

Now that makes us all smile.  It's nice to know that we are able to make a difference.  I shipped a box of 110 hats out to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center's pediatrics ward this week too.  Hopefully we will be able to send as many caps as they need.  Schnapps is ready to help by keeping watch as I tag each hat!

Hats of all sizes are needed!  Please join us if you are able!  I love to see how this organization grows all the time.

On the blanket side of life, I am putting together blankets for the local Emergency Department to have on hand to give to any child who is brought in suffering from abuse or neglect.  The staff say that the blankets are able to give a little security during a traumatic time.  Please join us here as well if you can.  Both websites have easy donation buttons and directions for where to drop items off if you live in Delaware and where to send them if you live in other states.

Week 4 - Hats & Afghan Finished!

Finally, I have finished the Winter Lace Afghan. This is a Lion Brand pattern and it was great to knit.  I really enjoyed it and the detail is fantastic.  Knit in Wool Ease Thick and Quick, it's extra toasty.  This is headed out early in the week to a special person.
My washing machine broke this week and flooded my basement........tons of fun.  Luckily, ALL hats, blankets and yarn were safely in plastic tubs and nothing was damaged.  Can't say the same for the rest of my basement, but the important things were saved!

Schnapps was busy helping me this week.......

He likes to be included!  Together we got 4 hats finished for Delaware Head Huggers!  I did 2 roll brim loom hats, 1 Carolyn Rose cap and 1 woven top loom knit hat.

I've got several hats and blankets that need to be tagged this week.  Now that the basement is dried out and the new washing machine is churning out clean clothes again, I will be able to sit down and get to that.  As always, I am simply amazed at the gorgeous items that are donated each and every week!
I'll be working on meeting my goal of at least 2 hats this week and I'm hoping to cast on for a blanket for Kozy Kovers for Kids too!

Join us if you can - all are welcome!

Week 3 - Goal Met Again!

Well, even though I was a bit behind schedule this week, I have completed 2 hats for Delaware Head Huggers!  I have to tell you about this chance meeting in a doctor's office waiting room:  I was waiting for my Dad, knitting to pass the time, and a man told me that you can get hats like I was knitting at the hospital.  He told me how there is a group that does this wonderful thing of donating hats for patients undergoing chemo.  He's been going through chemo and even though they had a lot of pink and "girl" hats, they found him a nice masculine one to wear.  He was very impressed with this group........so I asked if it was Delaware Head Huggers, and it was!  So, I introduced myself and gave him a card so he can call me if he needs any other hats in masculine colors!  Made me feel wonderful to just randomly run into someone who we were helping.

And it made me think that I really have to at least split the hats I make between male and female designs and colors.  So frequently I knit something I think of as "pretty" that I forget that men need these caps too.  So, I am going to try to be sure at least half of what I make is suitable for men.  Because honestly, women might like to wear hats in more masculine colors, but not too many men want to wear pink hats!

With that in mind, and since the pink one (a Carolyn Rose cap) was the one I was knitting when I met this man, the second one I did this week is in navy and gray.

Other spectacular news is that Charity Chix of Pittsburgh has officially started their own Kozy Kovers for Kids chapter.  Now anyone in the Pittsburgh area can donate directly to them!  Contact info is on the website at www.kozykoversforkids.org

82 hats and 7 blankets came in this week!  It's amazing that so many people are willing to use their talents to help.  Remember to spread the word - we can use all the help we can get - from moral support, to supplies, to hats and blankets.

I'm off to watch football and knit........my afghan is almost finished and I have at least 2 hats to make this week.

Happy Knitting!

2012 Week 2 - Goal Met!

Well, the second week of 2012 is drawing to a close and I managed to make 2 more hats this week.  Simple caps specially made for an individual who needs to keep her head warm in the cold weather. I shipped out a box of hats to her and a box of lighter weight hats to a little one in Hawaii who is undergoing treatment as well.

Delaware Head Huggers received about 51 hats this week!  So many people are willing to help that it's incredible.  I'm so lucky to have dedicated people who send in hats in groups of 15, 20 or even more at a time.  We're definitely making a difference.........I just wish we had enough hats to send to everyone who requests some.  I've got a waiting list, but we're getting there.  And I just might manage to get another hat finished this weekend............we'll see.

So many kind comments are still coming in about the Carolyn Rose cap pattern.  It makes me happy to see how much good is being done and how many people now know about the wonderful person I lost.  I hope to design some more hat patterns in the near future.........but right now I'm working fast to get as many chemo caps finished as possible to send to these people in need.

Kozy Kovers for Kids received 6 more blankets this week too!  Again, I am amazed at how generous people are with their time, talents and skills.  Beautiful blankets hopefully help these poor children.  Exciting news is that the Charity Chix of Pittsburgh, PA are teaming up with us to start the PA chapter of Kozy Kovers for Kids!!  They will be working with Pressley Ridge to start with and who knows where we can go from here..................  My dream is that someday every child in foster care, and any child who is suffering from abuse or neglect, will have a handmade blanket to show that someone cares.  I hope that it won't matter what state the child is in, we will be able to give them a hug and a blanket.

I'm still working on my afghan...........not very much has been done I'm sorry to say.  I keep focusing on hats and not spending enough time on the afghan.  Schnapps managed to sprain his toe playing ball this week - he's feeling just about all better now, but that definitely took time away from knitting.  He loves to snuggle while I knit, but he needed undivided snuggling for a few days.....  :)  But, I hope to spend at least a few hours this weekend adding more rows to it.  I adore the pattern and plan on making one for Kozy Kovers for Kids once I have finished this gift.

Spread the word if you would about Delaware Head Huggers and Kozy Kovers for Kids!

Week 1 - Goal Met!

Well, the first week of 2012 and I have met my goal of knitting at least 2 hats.  I've got a special order for someone that I am working on, so I am well on my way through hat number 4, but 3 are finished and ready for this week.  Simple, but effective chemo caps, they will help keep someone warm this winter.

This week has been slow for Delaware Head Huggers (www.delawareheadhuggers.org) and Kozy Kovers for Kids (www.kozykoversforkids.org), but I know that many hats and blankets are making their way to me.  My aunt in Virginia has shipped a box, Ann has dropped off hats and blankets at her local library and many more people are helping.  I hope that we are able to help more people in 2012 than we did in 2011.........a good goal, I think.

Thank you again for all of you who have written about the Carolyn Rose cap.  I'm touched by everyone's kindness and by the sheer amount of people who are busy helping others.  I received a memorial card in the mail this week for Carolyn and this quote was on the front.  The simplicity and beauty of it made me cry.... I have to get a copy of the book to keep. "In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing. And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing, when you look at the sky at night . . . You--only you--will have stars that can laugh!" And when your sorrow is comforted (time soothes all sorrows) you will be content that you have known me. You will always be my friend. " - The Little Prince ~ Antoine de Saint-Exupery
What a wonderful thought - "you will content that you have known me".  I will miss her forever and I so wish that I had been able to talk to her and help her through things, but I will always be so grateful to have known her.  I'm trying to find comfort in that and to keep her spirit alive by doing good things.  I hope that any of you who have lost a loved one can find comfort in it as well.
Now I'm off to knit more hats - I've got someone waiting for some to be delivered this week and I do not want to let her down.
Happy Knitting Everyone.  Make beautiful things and share them!

Gratitude & New Year's Resolutions

First of all, I have to thank all of you who have come to see the Carolyn Rose Cap and who have contacted me.  It is amazing that so many of you have found the pattern already.  I am truly grateful for those of you who are paying it forward in Carolyn's name.  Please feel free to post comments or email me at any time.

One thing that keeps running through my mind is that I should have knit something for Carolyn - the fact that I can not now is upsetting.  I have learned that I should knit and give - whenever someone is special to me.  I won't just wait for a special occasion or a particular reason.............give to those you love and care about always.  I won't stop knitting presents - I love to see someone's face light up when they get a handmade gift, but I'll hopefully manage to give more "just because" presents, not just birthday and Christmas gifts.

With New Year's Eve creeping around the corner and the hustle and bustle of Christmas behind me, I have been thinking about what to set as goals for 2012.  My resolution is to knit more!  Who's with me on that?? I should probably resolve to get rid of some of my yarn stash too, but I know that I will still buy yarn............even if I have several tubs full of yarn already...........especially if it is on sale!

So, I think I should set a goal for myself - to knit at least 2 hats a week for Delaware Head Huggers.  I am pretty sure that I can manage that even on really busy weeks.  Knifty Knitter Looms are wonderful things - I love to hand knit too, but when pressed for time, a loom knit hat can be completed in less than an hour.  I'll have to keep track of how many hats I knit on needles and how many I loom knit in 2012............but either way, at least 2 a week should be making their way to patients.  And hats made for friends or family, if not chemo caps, will not count!

I would also like to make more blankets for Kozy Kovers for Kids.  I find that I focus on hats and do not make nearly as many blankets as I should.  Maybe a realistic goal is to make at least 2 blankets in 2012..............that sounds possible.

Right now I am working on this afghan - it's a Lion Brand pattern - Winter Lace Afghan, pattern number 80115AD.  I just started it, so I have quite a ways to go, but it's a beautiful pattern.  This is a gift for someone, so it doesn't count as one of my 2 blankets for Kozy Kovers.

I've got an embroidered baby blanket that I started years ago that I really should finish too.  I see many goals for myself in 2012!  I wonder how many I will manage to meet!

I also want to get more people involved with Delaware Head Huggers and Kozy Kovers for Kids.  I'll have to spend some time on marketing - the local papers are wonderful about running articles about the need for hats and blankets - I'll have to expand my reach a bit.  The more who know about us, the more we can help.  Tell people about us please - send them to our websites and our Facebook pages. And most of all, have them contact me if we can help them in some way.

Happy New Year Everyone.  I'm very grateful that I will be able to spend the holiday with my family and I hope each of you has a beautiful time as well.

Happy Knitting!  Make beautiful things and pass them on!!!

Happy Thanksgiving to All!

Well, I've been busy knitting, but wanted to take a few minutes out to stop and say THANK YOU to everyone who has helped Delaware Head Huggers and Kozy Kovers for Kids get off the ground.  It's been absolutely amazing working with everyone and seeing all the beautiful items all these talented people are willing to donate! I never imagined when I started this that there would be so many people wanting to help.  People have donated money for postage, materials to be used to create hats and blankets and moral support - all of which is needed, wanted and appreciated!

Every week, I am completely in awe at some of the beautiful items that come in......each made with so much love that you can see it in every stitch.  I've met so many inspiring people through these organizations........people suffering losses, grieving, injured and ill themselves, who somehow reach inside themselves to create gorgeous things for others.  AMAZING!!

Delaware Head Huggers is in need of hats - and I couldn't be happier.  I've been contacted by several hospitals and chemo centers that received hats last year asking for more.  We're managing to supply individuals who hear about us with hats as well!  Hats are constantly coming in and I am shipping them out as fast as they come in. As of 11/20, we have received 5.359 hats!  More are in at the library as I type this and even more are on their way.

I've heard from patients, family members and health care providers telling how much a handmade hat means to a patient undergoing treatment.  It's a wonderful feeling to hear that our work is making a difference to people.

Kozy Kovers for Kids is also booming right now!  Our latest total was 577 blankets with more on the way.  We were able to donate many blankets to the State Police and local hospital for children suffering from abuse or neglect.  We have also sent many to foster care agencies to be given to children placed in foster homes, so that they at least have one item that is truly their own.

We will be working with Kind to Kids and their "My Blue Duffel" program.  The program supplies duffel bags so foster children do not have to use trash bags to transport their belongings. Kozy Kovers is going to try to donate as many blankets as needed so that each duffel bag comes with a blanket too!

I am truly thankful and grateful to everyone who has helped. We are a success because of each individual who contributes an item, a penny or a positive thought to us.

Please spread the word about us!

Hi there!

Hi!  I am a relatively new knitter and I'm really excited about all I'm learning along the way.  I love to snuggle with my miniature Schnauzer Schnapps while I'm knitting and he is always impressed with what I create......  :)  He loves to wear a scarf - he's got a regular one, a Christmas one and a Valentine's one and I just made him a cowl that he loves!

When I first started, about a year ago, I contacted Head Huggers to inquire about donating some hats. I found out that there was not a splinter group in my state, so I started one.  We collect new, handmade hats for patients who are undergoing chemo, have had brain surgery or are recovering from burns. I'm happy to say that Delaware Head Huggers www.delawareheadhuggers.org collected and distributed 3,520 hats in 2010.  We've already got 191 for 2011 too!

I also started Kozy Kovers for Kids, www.kozykoversforkids.org around the same time.  We collect handmade blankets to give to children entering the foster care system in Delaware. We collected 365 blankets in 2010!

I am really excited about being able to give back through knitting. I also am trying to make things for myself in the limited amount of time I have in between work, tagging hats and blankets and taking care of my family. I'm hoping that by starting this blog, I will actually inspire myself to get more knitting accomplished!

If anyone has some nice hat or blanket patterns that you are able to share, please send them to me to share on Delaware Head Huggers or Kozy Kovers for Kids.
